Chapter 5 Vocabulary

1. Above the fold- refers to the placement of the most important elements near the top of a Web page so that they are visible without requiring the user to scroll.

2. Appropriateness- a design concept that refers to own well the elements in the Web site match the purpose and target audience.

3. Assets panel- a panel that helps Web site development by gathering a list of objects, such as images, that are available ion the site.

4. Bottom global navigation bar- a navigation bar near the bottom of a web page, which contains links to every page of a Web site.

5. Breadcrumb trail- a navigation bar that displays the page names in order of level, from the home page to the current page, based on the navigation structure.

6. Child Page- a web page that has at least one page above it in the navigation structure of a web site.

7. Consistency- a design concept that refers to repetition in the placement of elements.

8. Content- the text, images, and other objects presented to the user on a web page.

9. Copyright notice- the text Copyright year, which includes the year of publication.

10. Elements- text, images, or other media. Elements on a web page include navigation bars, a logo or heading, copyright information, and content.

11. E-mail hyperlink- a link that allows the user to send an e-mail message.

12. Footer- the bottom area of a web page which includes a global navigation bar and other information such as copyright, the date of the last update, and a link to contact the author.

13. Header- the top area of a web page which includes a logo or heading, global navigation bar, and possibly a breadcrumb trail.

14. Library item- content placed in a separate file and given a descriptive name so that it can be used repeatedly in a web site.

15. Local navigation bar- a navigation bar that typically contains links to the child pages of the current page.

16. Navigation bar- a set of hyperlinks that give a user a way to display the different pages in a web site.

17. Navigation structure- the organization of a web site.

18. Parent page- a web page that has at least one page below it in the navigation structure of a web site.

19. Placement- a design concept that refers to the arrangement of web page elements.

20. Path- breadcrumb trial

21. Printer-Friendly version- a web page with the same content as another web page, except this page will print correctly.

22. Purpose- the intent of the web site.

23. Root folder- the folder created during the site definition for storing files and folders.

24. Same-level page- web pages at the same level in a navigation structure of a web site.

25. Target audience- the individuals that are intended to use the web site.

26. Time stamp- a date or time that changes automatically when a page is modified.

27. Top global navigation bar- a navigation bar near the top of a web page, which contains links to the first and second level pages of a web site.

28. Top-level page- a web page at the highest level in the navigation structure of a web site, usually the home page.

29. Usability- a design concept that refers to how well the user can navigate through the pages of a web site to find desired information.

30. Visual cue- a pattern or object that the user sees and identifies quickly after repeated use.

31. Web page design- the web page's layout and the content elements.

32. Web page layout- the arrangement of teh elements on the page.

33. Web site development- the process of planning and creating a web site.

34. White space- any blank area on a page, regardless of the color.
